Currently 45 States have regulatory requirements and/or licensing.

Requirements or licensing include, but are not limited to:

  • Fitter licensing
  • NICET requirements for management, designers, inspectors
  • Testing for fitters, inspectors, designers
  • Contractor licensing

New York State does not have regulatory requirements and/or licensing

There are those who believe that sprinkler fitters, whose profession it is to install life safety systems, need not be required to be skilled or to demonstrate they are qualified.

The USA Sprinkler Fitters Association believes that the proper installation and maintenance of fire suppression systems is not only critical to protecting life and property, it is also important for maintaining the integrity of the fire sprinkler industry.

In many states, a myriad of professions are required to be licensed or certified

However, in New York State anyone employed by a company can install, inspect, test, or maintain a fire suppression life safety system without demonstrating any skills or qualifications.

Specific requirements are left to the authority having jurisdiction

When a jurisdiction fails to enact such specific requirements that determine who is and who is not qualified, it ultimately affects first responders and the occupants of buildings.

It is essential that any person who works on fire suppression systems have the required education

Apprenticeship, along with continuing education, will protect New Yorkers and first responders when these critical life safety systems are needed.

Regulating Sprinkler Fitters: Controversy or Common Sense?

Sprinkler Fitter Apprenticeship

As long as there is no requirement that sprinkler fitters demonstrate qualification, some sprinkler fitter apprenticeship training programs will be underutilized, or not utilized at all

Licensing and Continued Education

Without requirements for continuing education, installers can't keep up with the ever-evolving codes and standards

Essential Workers in the Fire Sprinkler Industry

Life safety systems need to be installed, maintained, and tested by qualified individuals to minimize risk, help prevent loss, injuries, and death from fire

New York led the Nation in fire-related deaths along with Texas and California

In 2017 there were 1,319,500 fires reported in the US. Caused 3,400 civilian deaths, 14,650 civilian injuries and $23 billion in property loss

American Flag

From 2008 to 2017 fires decreased by 6.2%. However, deaths increased in the same time period by 9.6%

Sprinkler systems decrease the fire death rate per 1000 reported fires by about 81%
